the joy of teaching, the love of learning

PAFT

Welcome to the Parents As First Teachers (P.A.F.T) Programme
Ko Nga Matua Hei Kaiako Tuatahi

We are delighted to have been delivering this reputable programme to parents in the Napier and Hastings districts since 2001.

What is PAFT?

PAFT is based on the philosophy that parents are their children's first and most important teachers, and offers support and guidance to parents in this role.

Families receive free visits in the home from parent educators who share knowledge, ideas, activities and handouts on:

  • what to look for and expect as a child grows and develops
  • ways families can provide exciting, educational and inexpensive experiences for their children
  • using everyday experiences as learning opportunities for children
  • how to help a child develop a love of books and stories
  • practical ideas on creating a safe environment that is exciting and fun
  • setting realistic limits for a child’s behaviour and what to do about problems
  • ways to help each child grow to his or her full potential.
The PAFT programme is funded by the Government and administered by The Ministry of Social Development.

Families who take part in PAFT can also continue to use other services such as Plunket, public health, Kohunga Reo, childcare, Parents Centre, Playcentre, Kindergarten, or Pacific Islands Early Childhood Education Centres, etc.

How To Join PAFT

The PAFT programme offers a limited number of places, so it is advisable to enroll as soon as possible (even before the birth of your child). You may be referred by a health advisor or you may contact the service yourself.

“I enjoy my educator’s friendliness.  I think that’s so important and she doesn’t judge the way you raise your child.  I like learning how to make toys for my baby.” Loreta.

“One of the best features of PAFT is understanding where my child is at developmentally through the PAFT facilitators monthly assessments.” Vicki.

“PAFT needs to remain a vital part of people’s family life. Why? So every child has the opportunity to feel valued by their parents.” Katrina.
